Despite a forecast of inclement weather, the Super Tour Fall Bracket Championship went ahead last weekend at Luskville Dragway, where racers gathered for one final event of the season at that race track. Presented by Speedy Auto Gatineau in collaboration with KD Transmissions and Honeywell Works, the event attracted 53 Super Pro racers and 35 Footbrake racers. Despite the forecast, both Saturday and Sunday’s main events were completed.
Friday night’s Gambler’s Race saw defending Super Tour Champion Brock Godmaire lose control of his Chevy Vega when rain began pouring after both cars left the starting line. Thankfully, Godmaire’s safety equipment, along with the design of his race car and track barriers, did their job, allowing him to walk away unharmed from the crash. Racing was halted after the incident.
Saturday’s main event began mid-afternoon after the rain subsided but was suspended late at night with only four cars remaining. On Sunday morning, Red Hot Mike Chenier was still in the running with both of his entries. He won his duel with Dave Rennie in the door car class but was defeated in the dragster class by another standout performer this year, Russ Adams.
Russ Adams, from Ottawa, emerged as the big winner of the 8th points race after defeating Chenier in the final round.
In the Footbrake category, Larry Lepine Jr. continued his dominant season with yet another victory, defeating James Hewitt in the final. Mark Thompson reached the semifinals.
Early Sunday afternoon, in the Super Pro category, Roch Beaudoin from Northern Ontario advanced to the final round after defeating Dan Lanctot from St-Eustache, while Mike Chenier triumphed over Brandon Barker from Jasper, Ontario.
Mike Chenier, hailing from Gatineau, went on to win the event, redeeming himself after a runner-up finish in the previous race.
The Footbrake category crowned a first-time winner, Mike Armstrong, who bested the always-tough Stephen Ballantyne in the final. Ballantyne had earlier defeated Mike Labelle in the semifinals.
In the Junior category, third-generation racer Julia Malcolm dominated the weekend. She won on Saturday, beating Miguel Nadeau in the final, and followed it up with a victory on Sunday, defeating Mavrick Angers in the final round.
The Pro 1 Safety Canada ELITE16 race and the Mister Transmission Footbrake Challenge were postponed until next year. New dates for these races will be announced at the start of next year.
Next, racers will head to Napierville Dragway for the season’s final weekend, the CANADIAN BRACKET FINALS, presented by Para Performance in collaboration with Atelier Mécanique CLR and S.M. Transport. The event will be held on September 27, 28, and 29. Stay tuned for more information!
